COTABATO CITY โ The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has recorded a significant drop in poverty incidence among families from 52.6 percent in 2018 to 29.9 percent in 2021, a huge decrease amid the BARMMโs transition and COVID-19 pandemic.
The said record is based on the announcement of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA-BARMM) during its regional dissemination forum on 2021 Full Year Official Poverty Statistics held Wednesday, October 13, 2022 at Robinsons Convention Center, Cotabato City.
In a message conveyed by BPDA Planning and Policies Bureau Director Melanie M. Indar, Director General Engr. Mohajirin T. Ali stated that poverty reduction is a significant milestone in the history of BARMM, saying โAll of the BARMM government’s efforts to reduce poverty are starting to bear fruit, despite the challenges that have been brought about by the regionโs transition, as well as the pandemicโs compounded effects.โ
โIt is remarkable to note that the BARMM has seen a huge decrease in poverty incidence over the last three years, from 52.6 percent in 2018 to 29.9 percent in 2021. We saw the greatest percentage drop of any region in the Philippines,โ she added.
Moreover, among five provinces of the BARMM, Lanao del Sur recorded a huge drop in poverty incidence among families from 64.2 percent in 2018 to 7.4 percent in 2021, joining the least poor cluster in 2021. (Mary Lovella Lao-Lastimosa with reports from Janaima Ebrahim, BPDA-BARMM)
